I can't find any download links in the "downloads" section, only links to the pages.

I have IE. Just play from the browser.
Also, for me, Blockland was from an  "unknown publisher". I have it. You must be doing some thing wrong.

after i got to the falling sand game a bar popped up at the top and said download to active x control

What OS are you on?
You're not using Internet Explorer or something, are you?
Just click the link, save the file, open it like normal, and click 'allow' for everything it says.
