Author Topic: iPhone 3G - WiFi Loss During Sleep Mode  (Read 2461 times)

Hey, people. I recently was given my dad's old iPhone 3G, with no phone service. I wanted it in place of my Touch, because it has the camera, mic, vibration, and other stuff. Well, when I put it into sleep mode (I.E. Click the button on the top-right of the phone), the WiFi turns off. I've done some Googling, and I've found that it's a "feature," to save battery. Well screw that, I'd rather get my texts when they're sent than not plug in my iPhone for 3 hours. Is there any way to keep the WiFi on, after it's in sleep mode? Yes, I've seen the Insomnia app by Cydia, but I don't want to jailbreak it. Thanks in advance.

There is no way to do this without jailbreaking the device.

I must ask, though, why don't you want to jailbreak it? It's perfectly legal.

Maybe hes afraid his dad will yell at him. No offence.

Ah, well that sucks.
Well, I'd prefer to not pay (I found one that was around $40, and it looked pretty good. Maybe I'll get some money together) for it. They advertise that Cydia's app store is free, but after looking at it, all of the apps cost you. And it seems like you have to screw with it every time Apple releases one of their quarter-updates, like 4.0.2.
But thanks anyway, you saved me a lot more Googling.
By the way, does this look good? It's the $40 one I was looking at. I'm wondering if an "unlock" and a "jailbreak" are the same.

Edit: Venson, my dad's actually pretty smart when it comes to technological stuff. He wouldn't yell at me for it.
For the record, I'm actually not mad.

Unlocking your iPhone means breaking its ties to AT&T, so you are able to use it with other phone companies. When you jailbreak an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you remove the Apple-imposed restrictions that prevent you from loading applications not sold through the iTunes App Store.

Can anyone second this, without Chrome?

Oh, okay. Thanks. It says on the site I posted that when you unlock an iPhone (Which is the product they're selling; an unlock), you have the option to also jailbreak it. So, that particular unlock should work, if I'm only trying to jailbreak it?

Their reputation is bad by ratings. Also the comments are poor to the ratings. If you can see the -1 on them that means theyre bad comments. look at the date too.

If you use AT&T for your cell phone service, then unless you actually want to unlock it, only jailbreak it. To jailbreak it, download a jailbreak tool such as redsn0w or Spirit. I personally recommend Spirit since it's made by one of the more influential people in the jailbreaking community, and it automatically detects the device's firmware upon connecting it to the computer. It also makes it so you don't have to put the device into DFU mode first.

Meh, whatever.

Oh, okay. Thanks a lot. I'll go take a look at Spirit.
Edit: Do you know of any jailbreaks that work on 4.0 or higher? :/

I sent you a PM, check it if you'd please.

Don't spend any money on Jailbreaking. What is your current exact firmware? (4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2)
(Settings > General > About)

If it's 4.0 or 4.0.1, to jailbreak, simply visit this site on your iPhone/iPod Touch:
http://www.jailbreakme.com

Slide the thing that says "slide to jailbreak", wait for it to finish, you should be jailbroken.

Visit it in your iPhone to jailbreak fast and easy.
And free.

Is this legal in the US?
Yes. A new DMCA exemption was approved by the Library of Congress, specifically allowing jailbreaking.
