Actually quite recently Gmod has been giving me problems with connecting to servers. The download of any files I need happens, then the server info is loaded, but the client info connection ends up freezing the screen. Either it freezes of I don't feel like waiting 15 minutes for a connection.

I figure a manual install will have to be done.

I have it, it's loving GOOD.

Basically you get to do whatever you want. I recommend you get the Orange Box with it for best results, though.

There isn't even a Half Life 2 demo (that i know of), when did this happen and what have you done around the time it started?

Well, it's not actually downloading it, it just sometimes appears on the downloads list as a paused download.

Also, the steam taskbar icon is sometimes highlighted like it's downloading something.

I think it started doing this after the Half-Life 2 source engine update.
