Iirc, pins are codes you get inside of Nintendo games that you enter in on the Club Nintendo site to get points, which you can then use to get "exclusive" Club Nintendo items delivered to you.

The whole things pointless unless you can buy an absurd amount of Nintendo games as soon as they come out (pins become worth less and less points depending on how old the game is)
