Author Topic: The Homebrew Channel; What it is, What it does, How.  (Read 5239 times)

The Homebrew Channel is a special hack which allowes you to run home-made software.
Games, playing DVD's, Putting all your games on an USB hard drive and playing it from there, is all possible with this. If you're interested, here's some stuff about it and how to get it.

What you'll need:
- An SD card (The size doesn't matter all that much. But it needs to be empty for installing. After that, you can put whatever you want. So if you have pictures on it, put in on your computer, install the HBC, and put it back on.)
- An computer/laptop (ALL systems work. Windows, mac, linux, etc.) able to read SD cards, or an SD reader.
- A Wii (Durr)
- A working Wii Remote (hurrdurr)

There are a few ways to install. The best, and easiest way is the Bannerbomb method.
Step 1:
You need to check what kind of firmware you have (What updates you've already installed). You can easily do this by first, going to your options menu,

And then Settings. (NOT data management. My pointer messed up a bit, lol.)

Your firmware will show in the top-right corner. It's something between 3.2E/U and 4.3E/U. It's most likely to be 4.3 or 4.2.
Step 2:
If your firmware is 4.3, i'm sorry, but i'm not familiar with this. Watch this youtube tutorial for it.
THIS ONE WORKS FOR 4.3 ONLY.
Now, if you're firmware 4.2 or lower, keep following my tutorial.
Step 3:
For firmware 4.2, download this
For firmware 4.1 or lower, download this
If your SD card has a private directory with saved channels, rename it temporarily, e.g. to "privateold". Having other saved channels on the same card will screw it up. (You can skip this step if you don't have any channels on the SD card. Saves are fine.)
Step 4:
Copy the Bannerbomb "private" folder to the root of your SD card.
Step 5:
Take your Wii executable, name it "boot.dol" or "boot.elf" if it isn't already, and save it in the root directory of your SD card.
Step 6:
Put your SD card in your Wii and turn it on.
For firmware 4.1 and lower: Go into Wii Options --> Data Management --> Channels --> SD Card.
For firmware 4.2,: Go to the SD Card Menu on the main System Menu screen
A message should appear asking to "load boot.dol/.elf". If it freezes or does not appear, download the next .zip file from the Bannerbomb website and start over.
Step 7:
The homebrew channel will show up as a normal channel. Start it up, and if it takes you to a screen with bubbles, do a dance, make a handstand, be happy. You installed the HBC correctly. (You can be proud of yourself)

Now for some stuffs to load on it.
The Homebrew Channel is used to load user- or selfmade-content. This includes:
- Games
- Emulators, with most perfect, including a NES, SNES, Genesis, Point & Click game-emulator (and yes, it works perfect too. :D). And also includes an N64 emulator, with playing most games very good with a few issues. This plays Diddy kong racing, SM64, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario kart 64, and more perfect/near to perfect.
- Hacking tools
- Media players, which allowes you to watch movies, pictures, listen to music streaming right off your SD card/USB stick
- Hentai Manga readers
- Radio (Which listens to real channels)
- Action replay like code devices (Which also allowes the wonders of brawl texture hacking
- Other stuffs to play around :3

Now how to get all this stuff.
Step 1:
Make an folder on the root of your SD card named "apps" (Without the ")
Step 2:
Now there are two ways to put stuff on your SD card:
Step 2a:
Use this if you DO have internets on your Wii.
Download this, and put it in the /apps/ folder on your SD card.
This is a special app which allowes you to download stuff off the website using your Wii only, and it will put it in your /apps/ folder without you having the need to put it in.
Step 2b:
Use this if you DON'T have internets on your Wii.
Download apps from here: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebrew_applications
And put it in your /apps/ folder.
Step 3:
Start the homebrew channel/Exit the Homebrew browser, and start teh apps :DDD

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Q: HOLY MOTHER OF stuff I GET A BLACK SCREEN WITH ONLY TEXT WHAT DO I DO AM I GOING TO DIE IS MY WII BROKE-
A: NO. This means there's an error in the code of an app you've downloaded. This does NO HARM AT ALL to your wii, SD card, or disc that's in it. No worries. Just pull the power cord out, or hold the power button 8 seconds long for it to turn off. Put it back on, and carry on.

Q: Does this break my warranty?
A: Sadly, yes it does. But, this cannot break your wii in ANY way. As long as you keep your hands off the System tool-apps until you know what you're doing.

Q: Can my Wii explode of this?
A: No, Sorry.

Q: I want to go a step further then apps, and softmod
A: Softmodding allowes you to do install more self-made channels, load games off an USB stick, et cetera. If you want to do this, you need to find a tutorial that has the right information about it, and most importantly, you need to understand what your doing. Doing softmodding the wrong way (Which is kinda hard, I admit), can result in bad things.

Q: Cheaters?
A: Mario kart Wii hackers are complete asswipes. They abuse the HBC to ruin others fun. However, 90% of the lulz hackers don't know what they are doing, so they get bricked by nintendo for being stupid.

Q: Wuts bricking
A: When your Wii is bricked it means you are banned from playing online. This is only possible if:
1. You're messing with the system tools and do something really bad
2. Cheat in online gameplay
Just don't cheat online.

Q: Emulators? This is illegal, you know.
A: As long as you own the games you play on them, your playing legal.

Websites you might want to visit:
Wiibrew.org ----> A website dedicated to all hacking
Youtube.com ---> Very useful for searching tutorials on doing stuff
Google.com ----> Very useful for searching stuffs.

Discuss. I spent like 1-2 hours getting information and making this o.o'

Just to throw this out there, this also happens on DS/DSi/DSXL.
Its a Trojan Virus that overwrites game files critical point and displays a image of a brick wall on booting a game.

Theres only 2 types. More info can be found here and here.

Quote from: Symantech
The Trojan normally arrives in an archive file called r0mloader.zip, containing the file r0mloader.nds. This archive file may also contain a text file called r0mloader.txt.

When Trojan.DSBrick.A is uploaded onto a Nintendo DS device and then executed, it overwrites critical areas of memory.

If the device is restarted, it will no longer start properly

If the device is restarted, it will no longer start properly.
EDIT: This Virus dose not work on the Wii, or atleast not now. Just be cautious when using homebrew on DS gaming systems.

I thought exactly the same. Eventually, I did it anyways.

lol

I though brick meant the console stops working and there's nothing to do to fix it

I was going to do this but then i desided not too and now i want to sell my wii.I hope they make homebrew for the DSi.

Bricking is not being banned from online play. Bricking is when you render the hardware completely useless through bad modification of the system (e.g. changing firmware).

But what if it isn't interesting?  :cookieMonster:
If you don't care about what's in the OP, you have no reason to be here.

If you don't care about what's in the OP, you have no business here.
I care if it's interesting.

Why would I buy a game just to get Homebrew to work?

Is there another way?

I've always wanted to try this but I didn't want to mess up my wii :I
