So I got GIMP a little while ago, but I can't seem to find out how to make stuff transparent. Can you guys help me out?

Use the lasso or color select tool then delete. Oh and you have to add an alpha channel first.

Edit: Oh and there's something called Google.

Here's my tutorial:

1. Open gimp (derp)
2. Load the image you want to trans
3. Go to the layers section, right click the layer, and add an alpha channel
4. Use the color selection tool if the background is a solid color, if not use the lasso tool
5. Once you select the stuff you don't need, hit delete
6. !?!?!?
7. Profit!!!

New images:

New -> Advanced Options -> Fill with: Transparency

Existing images on a background:

Magic Wand -> Select background -> Ctrl + I -> Cut -> New Layer -> Layer Fill Type: Transparency -> Paste

What about for an item icon?
