I have some tips for building:
• Try to have things protrude, whether they're details or even a whole other wing of a spaceship, just don't make a huge square and call it a bar, cafe, house, etc.
• When building, try to use bigger bricks. Imagine a wall where * = a small brick.

See what I mean? Try to use small bricks for details, not as actual walls or something.
• Nobody expects your builds to be good right from the start, just look at different styles and use what you like to make your own.
• Try to look at real things or images when you need inspiration for a first build, the more you see, the more you are inspired.
• Builds not on baseplates are usually frowned upon, so make sure you try to use those.
Remember, we don't expect 'the most epic build ever' from you and you sure don't need to build one, just keep trying from what you learn. And if you ever spot me online or in the IRC, I'd be glad to help you further. Oh, and install mods and stuff as you deem necessary, I recommend Return to Blockland which contains the IRC feature I spoke of earlier.
