Here are my suggestions:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad. Intel's CPUs may be more expensive than AMD's, but they are faster.
Motherboard: I would suggest either GIGABYTE, ASRock, or EVGA. I have a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P which works great, and I have heard good reviews of ASRock and EVGA.
RAM: Crucial. I have 4 GB of Crucial Ballistix in my rig, and it is working great. Corsair is also known for making good RAM.
PSU: Corsair, and more than 650 watts. Corsair is known for reliable PSUs. Also, I suggest that you get a modular PSU. That means that you only have to connect the cables you need, which makes for cleaner wiring.
GPU: I can't really make a GPU suggestion, as it varies for everyone.
Hard Drive: My Western Digital Caviar Blacks are working great, but I have also heard good reviews of Seagate, Maxtor, and Hitachi. Make sure to get a SATA drive, as they are the most compatible.
Optical Drive: Lite-On SATA. It's the most compatible.
Case: This largely depends on your budget. Thermaltake and Lian-Li both make really high quality cases. I have had good luck with my $100 Lian-Li.

Hope this helps!

Doesn't matter for most people.

ASRock,
No

edit: I didn't mean to imply ASRock was the worst brand ever (not by a long shot), but he should probably drop a few extra dollars for a much higher quality motherboard. Not $336 nice though.

Eh, games are pretty CPU intensive nowadays and the C2Q are aging fairly well. They easily outperform Phenom IIs at the same clock.

<3 my Q9650.

I am changing from AMD to Intel i7. I am not getting i7 extreme.

If you're going to get the 930 just get the 950, it's $10 more.

If you're lazy and don't want to build a CPU, buy the HP Pavilion Elite and HP 2159m monitor. Thats what I have.

Alright, but will that motherboard work well with those parts?

No because that motherboard uses LGA 1156. The i7-950 uses LGA 1366.

If you still want the 950 use this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423&cm_re=Gigabyte_UD3r_x58-_-13-128-423-_-Product

It's even 10% off right now if you use the promo code.

edit: That RAM is fine if you get a triple channel x58 motherboard. I can't say anything about its stability with your system, but it's compatible at the very least.

Okay. What about my hard drive? Video card? Case? PSU? Is that all I need for a computer?

Total: 1,230 Dollars so far.

I already commented on your video card and if I didn't mention anything else it's fine.

I don't know about you people, but I found a great wealth of computer parts by taking the side panel off my computer :D

But... don't you need those?

Anyways, Take notice that I switched my video card to an Nvida geforce Gt 470, I dont have the ATI anymore.

Sorry for double toast, but will the PSU handle all those well?

I don't want mine blowing up!
