No, the better way to do things is to just have the faces overlapping rather than making the inside of the model entirely hollow. Which I believe is what he is saying he did.

The reason people don't like hands is because no matter what color your avatar is, your hands will be that color, change it to white/black so AT LEAST it looks like they're wearing gloves/

But if you make the model entirely hollow it actually increases the poly count because you have to outline all parts of the model to make faces rather than just having them overlap.
