The CAPTCHA system serves two functions; first, it prevents bots from spamming sites, and second it uses the users collective "eyes" to identify words scanned from books that OCR failed to recognise.

The important thing to note is that the first word in the CAPTCHA isn't checked so any response can be entered for it.
