"To learn is to live" isn't a comparison. "As fire is to smoke" is. They don't go together to form an brown townogy.
"Learning is to living" would be correct, meaning that learning leads to living the same way fire leads to smoke... and I guess since some things burn with more or less smoke, that you could infer that learning some things will lead to a better life, although I guarantee that tangent wasn't in the original meaning.
