Author Topic: Steam rental games  (Read 1265 times)

I think it would be great of VALVe if they made steam so you could rent games.

Say I want to try out New Vegas. I could rent it for 10 dollars a week.

After a week, it uninstalls (leaving the data on your steam account, though) and asks if you are interested in this game.

Would this be a good idea?

This isn't necessarily a bad idea, but what's going to stop a person from making new accounts to continue the game where they left off since their profile data is stored on their hard drive and not steam.

Okay, it could be stored on your steam account. Plus, you can re-rent it, it isn't like a trial where you can never download it again.

Its not a bad idea

But they're still spending more money if they keep renting it rather than if they bought it.

Thats their choice

Not necessarily, that's assuming the game you are playing takes an extremely long time to beat.

Rent for $10 per day-beat it in two days

Buy for $50-beat in two day

Which would you take?

That doesn't mean anything. You can continue playing it, mod it, do other things with it. You can't do that with a rented version forever.

This is true.

What I'd really live VALVe to implement is trading in games, then having the money that the game gets you put into your Steam wallet, so that you can use it on new games. But they said that this wouldn't happen, so I doubt this would either.

Of course that wouldn't happen. You can't resell digital copies of games so there is no incentive for them to take back games.

Except again that's assuming the game is worth replaying and can be modded.

I think it would be nice if you could, in essence, "give" a copy of a game you never play to a friend. As long as that friend can't give the game back (i.e. two people could pass a game back and forth and both play it while only owning one copy) I don't see why this'd be a problem.

This isn't that bad of an idea. PSN has something like this, except it's more of a trial than a rental.
