Dude, I'm in the exact same situation. except it can be any branch of science and its a really big science fair
I've thought about disabling the gene in fruit flies that allows them to loveually differentiate between male and female and see if this results in lower population over time compared to non-disabled fruit flies but I am extremely phobic of larvae.

How are you planning to do that?

In fifth grade I set stuff on fire in a coffee can and timed how long it took to burn. I got a 98 C:
