Tensions against Mexican immigrants was one of the reasons why it was initially banned in California, as they smoked it.

I havn't researched into the history of the legality of hard drugs, mainly because I don't really care about them due to the risk factors.
Then again, I do think that the government should have no say as to what goes into your body.
