Author Topic: Running Blockland on Ubuntu with Wine Questions  (Read 744 times)

In an effort to drastically speed up my system, I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 to my laptop.

I've enjoyed a lot about it. It's faster and I basically just enjoy it more. But it does have it's drawbacks, and Blockland is included. I've managed to get Blockland running with Wine, and am glad, but I have noticed that it is very choppy.

I know it has to be interpreted by Wine and everything to run, but it does affect gameplay. It reminds me of keys sticking, like the jets get caught on or off, and I have to hit the keys again if you know what I mean. Occasionally it skips and looks off to one direction, or doesn't.

Basically I'm just wondering if there's a way to improve the way it runs. I'm sorry if what I'm saying doesn't make much sense, and can rephrase it if asked, but I am looking for help, and thanks in advance if you do.

tl;dr: running blockland on ubuntu with wine comes out a little choppy and I'm wondering if it can be fixed to some extent

I do also want to know if there is a way to get Java running, but I'm going to stick with running BL as my priority at the moment. If anyone knows about it though, feel free to post.

Again, thanks in advance for any help.

It seems that some of Torque Game Engine's scripts/features do not have proper replacement libraries. I've tried running a dedicated Blockland server on Ubuntu Server 10.10, and using the following Wine command:
Code: [Select]
wineconsole --backend=curses Blockland.exe -dedicated -map Slate
When "Dedicated server is now running." appears, I try launching a Blockland client on a seperate machine, and I see that the dedicated server is on the server list, try joining, takes very long but works, but when I join, the dedicated server console doesnt realise that I join. Then when I spawn, I crash around 10 seconds later. This is with only default add-ons, even tried disabling all default add-ons and music, still the same.

I do not recommend installing 10.10 as it doesn't work too well with blockland. I would suggest downgrading to 10.04, and updating wine to 1.3. Also, here's how to install java:
Go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal and type this:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fontsIf you need flash player, use:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
Also, if blockland is choppy, i have to ask: Have you installed your graphics drivers? Please tell me what kind of Graphics card you are using, and I'll happily tell you how to get the ubuntu drivers. :)

I'd like to know this too.
My mouse is all choppy in the game.

Have you tried using the beta instead of the regular release? The beta worked better on my system.

ffff, noedit.
By beta, I mean Wine.

Actually I first ran it on 10.04, a long time before 10.10 was released, and it didn't work. Then I tried get-release-upgrade stuffs, and tried again with 10.10, and got exactly the same error.
