Author Topic: Forcing 1997 DirectX 6.0 game into Windowed Mode?  (Read 4451 times)

I have been attempting to force Zork: Grand Inquisitor to run in Windowed Mode for the past day and more.

Methods that haven't worked:
  • Adding tags such as "-window" and "-w" to the shortcut.
  • Alt + Enter / Tab.
  • Although the closest I've found, DXWnd has proven dysfunctional as aid.

DXWnd is the closest since it appears to open a window at 640x480 (The native resolution of the game), but crashes the instant the window opens. I'm wondering if it might be a configuration problem and not the program itself, but this seems unsure.

http://www.mrbillsadventureland.com/reviews/x-y-z/zgiR/zgiR.htm The bottom of this page holds system requirements.

Edit: Game Resolution: 640x480 Res.

Edit2: Rewrite.

Edit3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a88-Jgt5Grw This video of a Non-English edition of the game is playing in Windowed Mode, apparently by code. I have commented, but any idea how?

Before I even click that, "3D." I know the game is at least partially pre-rendered. I believe completely pre-rendered to be exact. Not really 3D, although you move through it like that. You think that would work?

Well it has dozens of settings, but it includes "force windowed mode" for DirectX games. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, delete it.

Nope, still opened full screen. Any other ideas?

Did the game make an .ini file somewhere that you can modify?

Hmm. I see four, although this game is quite old. I'll go through these real quick and edit this post with results.

Edit: It looks like most of these were made by the programs I was trying. Looking through the files has found me working .avi's from the game (which most animations are done in them) and although fun to watch these at any resolution I wish, I need the full screen...

Any other suggestions? I'm hoping DxWnd can still work and just needs it's configuration settings... set correctly. This considering it starts at all at a lowered resolution, even if it flashed for a second.

Any ideas how to force this game to play windowed?

Threaten to kill it's mom?

Not cool, man. It's mom died in, like, the 80s.

Searching more has returned nothing functional. I've found a few more programs, none of which even came close to DxWnd. Anyone, help?

Use DXWnd.

It's meant for Maple Story but it works on almost every game. If this program doesn't work you're pretty much screwed.
