Author Topic: Dedicated Hosting Service [REQUESTING PAYMENT]  (Read 29126 times)

if stuff goes wrong, i would rather blame the host myself, not go through some kid on the forums.

I have to agree with Bisjac on this one. The exception I make is that I trust Ephialtes enough to be responsible with such a system as he has already demonstrated a sufficient level of maturity and goodwill in offering the RTB service out of his own pocket.

The idea of supporting dedicated servers through clans may make sense in other games, but most of the clans in Blockland are just power-trips for their "founders". Notice how almost all of them start off with a chain-of-command structure with the topic creator at the top? Few of them have truly dedicated members, and fewer still have members that are able to cough up money each month/year.

Technical issues like key security and add_on management aside, I just don't think you will get anywhere near 30 users paying for the service.

In a final trip, I'll see if 30 people are willing to pay the same moment I ask them to. If too many come, then it's whoever is first. If 30 people are ready, I could start accepting payments and then soon get a server up ready for them to start hosting.

I also don't know what you mean by add-on management, but people have FTP access so they can upload whatever they want to.

My clan, along with plenty of other ones, have no ranking system at all.

Updated OP with more up-to-date information.

My clan, along with plenty of other ones, have no ranking system at all.

16 out of the 20 clans listed on the first page of the clan section have some kind of ranking system. That's 4/5 or 80% if you prefer. Your clan is one of the exceptions to the rule.

The point still stands though; how many of your members would/could pay to support a clan server?

I also don't know what you mean by add-on management, but people have FTP access so they can upload whatever they want to.

My concern regarding add-ons is that people may be unfamiliar with how to use the FTP properly, and there is always the potential for abuse. I feel it relies too heavily on the users not only being technologically savvy, but also trustworthy.

1. People are going to have to know how to upload files. It's a basic skill that's required to use a dedicated server (or at least placing files and knowing a bit about the filesystem) anyway from your own computer.

2. What is there that I need to trust them about? They pay me, I really doubt they want to lose anything. They can't really harm anything if they wanted to anyway. (If this is about modifying EXEs and such, there's no worry, that will be controlled, partially by restricting users)

Cant host, piece of crap Macintosh :c

I wish you the best of luck in training people in the use of FTP. I know it isn't that complex, but it is a burden none the less.

Perhaps I don't know enough about how you intend to run the server, but I'm wondering if users will have segregated read/write permissions in each other's BL installations. To state it another way, will a one user be able to alter the settings and/or condition of another's server? If you can lock it down without harming ease of access, then all the more power to you. But try to avoid relying on users being honest with you and each other.

Of course.

If this was ready in a week, would you be able to pay when it's ready?
I need a tally to make sure I have enough people.

We're looking at $10/month with a $5 setup fee.
If you're interested in buying this service, post about it. I need 10 players to do this.

Assuming everything goes well, here are the rates:
Proposed Rates
FIRST TWO MONTHS: $20.00 / month

ALL OTHER MONTHS: $10.00 / month

So far, I have one person and I believe a few more are lying around.
