Author Topic: Yet another "I'm bulding compooter hue hue hue" thread.  (Read 1073 times)

So this Christmas I'm getting money from all my relatives, I will use said money to buy parts for my new computer I'll be building.

So it's time for JAW959 to jump on the computer building bandwagon.

I have 1 1/2 builds at the moment, the first one is complete but kind of stuffty, the second I got from recommendation by someone here (dkamm I think) and it isn't entirely complete

Build one
Case & Power Supply:
Processor
HDD:

stuffty Keyboard & Mouse:

RAM:
Motherboard:
Vidya Card:

$713

Build the second
Cooler

Vidya card

Processor
RAM
Case
Power Supply
HDD

I would appreciate recomendations for build 2's mobo.

I would also appreciate any kind of advice as I'm getting gray hair over this.

face it- virtually nobody is going to reply to this

With the second build, you're looking at $1004.89. However, it's the better build and it's the one I'd personally go for (which is funny because everything on there except the hard drive is in my other computer topic that I locked).

Yea that's where I got that build from, 1000 is a little steep for me though, you think I could bump down the ram?

You could take it down to 4GB, however I personally would choose a different case, because 4GB of RAM is not a very good choice with a processor of that speed. Alternatively, you could change the processor from an i7 to an i5 and change the RAM to 4GB, which would be better. A better case would be the Antec 300, let me go find a link.

So what exactly is the difference between an i5 and an i7? Is that the number of cores or just the model number?
And how does RAM relate to the processor?

Both the i5 and the i7 are quad-core processors. However, the only differences between the two are stated very well in this article.

And how does RAM relate to the processor?

The more RAM you have, the more information can be processed at a time. In terms of Blockland, more RAM = more bricks. 8GB of RAM with an i7 processor would work beautifully, while 4GB with an i7 would be limiting of the processor. All this is, of course, assuming your operating system can utilize all the RAM. For instance, my 64-bit Windows 7 can utilize all of my 4GB of RAM. 64-bit operating systems can use more RAM than 32-bit ones.

So is getting 64-bit Windows really worth it? I understand it's more expensive than 32-bit so I want to make sure this is something I'm not going to regret, is it inferior to 32 in any way?

No, it's much better than 32-bit. Pretty much any 64-bit OS is better than its 32-bit version.

They are the same price. Windows keys are also interchangeable between the two types of operating systems. I put a 32bit copy of windows 7 on my brother's computer with a key from a 64bit version.

But aren't there programs that won't install on 64?
