Author Topic: Exterior building  (Read 1142 times)

Well, I need some tips on exterior building. It always ends up looking stupidass, or it is just a box.
My interiors are love, though, and if you want a picture i'll go ingame and fetch a screeny.

I try to kind of "mimic" certain styles, but it never works out how i want it.

what kind of design are you looking for? Modern, fantasy, medieval, etc.

Well, i was hoping just overall tips, but i usually do modern.

It's been awhile, is anybody going to reply?

That was uncalled for.

Kade, what I can really suggest to you is try looking up floor plans of buildings to make them less boxy. But for a start, you could try creating rectangular, L, T, or H shaped buildings, or some combination of those.

As for the exterior, consistency is the key. Make sure whatever you add on the façade will match with the general style and feel of the building. One of the mistakes I used to make with my older town-houses was that they ended up looking like some weird wedding cake due to over-ornamentation.

I hope this helped, if you need more help post pictures of your w.i.p. stuff.

Although basic, this was a really good topic with tips.
A fair few different players also posted their tips and strategies towards building.

buildings need layers.

for a simple thing i use 3 total. inside detail, "wall", outside detail

if its something massive like a castle, i can use up to 6.
like the very center layer is basically a plain wall. as i build out from it.
there are inner trimmings of different types to accent each other for the interior look.
and same for the outside.

at least thats how i build. i build at very large scale and high detail

I'll make a couple attempts, and i'll post pictures to see how you like it.

Patterns.

EDIT: O should elaborate. Don't just make it random. Give it a pattern.

This might help, but I never EVER show the baseplates.

What I'm trying to say is that I use baseplates for stories/floors and stuff, but on the exterior it seems like it's just one whole wall and there is no floor at all.

Keep it simple, and realisic.
I usually base my buildings off of a real life building, adding my own twist to things.

I like using lots of the default windows for towers, seperated by a 1X1X5 or 1X2X5 in the middle of the windows.
