Author Topic: Quad Core Processors vs. Dual Core Processors for Gaming  (Read 1096 times)

I am debating on whether to get a High Performance Dual core or a Standard Quad core Processor for my new gaming rig that I am building. I have chosen the dual core right now, due to the slightly lower price, and the fact that most programs don't need more than 2 cores except video editing, but the information that I have looked up about the pros and cons of both are usually a year old. Can anyone help me decide here?

Many games do not support quad core from my understanding.

Get dual core.

quad means 4!

*catches the treat in his mouth*

I say get a quad core. It will last you much longer going forward.

My Core 2 Duo (2.8 GHz) from 2008 is still able to run basically anything, but I'd say get a quad-core.
You'll be able to run more stuff at once, including games that will support it later on.

some older games run like stuff on quad. but you can just tell your comp to only use 1 or 2 on any app you tell it to.

Most games run on a single core.

Blockland itself runs on two (one for physics bricks and one for everything else)
If you plan on running multiple programs along with your games (steam, MSN, Music, etc) then Quad Core may be the better option.
If you just play games and maybe run steam, then dual core, seeing how it's a minimum requirement nowadays.

simcity4 runs like horsecrap on multi cores lol.
it actually greatly improves when you disable all but 1 core for it.

Certain games and programs actually utilize more cores.

Blockland on requires 2 cores, physics and another for general stuff.

Very few things, if any, use more than 4 cores.

Crysis uses 3.

6 cores is overall a better outlook for the future but not neccasary at this time.

Like a Six-Core 3 GHz processor would do the same as a Four-Core 3 GHz processor if the game only need 3 cores.

Get it?

Actually, no it doesn't.
Blockland doesn't support multiple cores/threads.

but we multitask usually.
OS and other running things under that game would still use other cores.

its not always about hiding in the back for older stuff. you have to make room for new and old stuff together

Probably the only other application I would use would be steam. Music, maybe, but not often.

I may have to piggyback on the parts you picked out :D

That processor is cheap.

But great for the price.

How'd you go about telling it to only use # of cores?

Oh then Kompressor was lying then!

No. It does. Just two. One for purely physics bricks, other for everything else.
