The argument could be applied to any number of graphical/quality settings in the game.

  • Limited number of lights
  • No native anti-aliasing
  • Highly restricted draw distance
  • Limited number of "physics" bricks at a time
  • Limited events
  • Limited bricks

...and the list goes on. As far as I can tell, all of the above are restricted or none existent because having them causes Badspot considerable support headaches. Players with insufficient hardware trying to run at the top settings complaining of poor performance is not a fun thing to deal with. It is frustrating when those of us with decent hardware are being held back by the "lowest common denominator" but it's just the easiest way for him to reduce user frustrations and support calls.

It annoys me too, but I can't see any major incentive for him to lift these restrictions or add in the additional features.

Is there a way to auto-detect hardware, as in games that run the Source Engine, such that the program can set recommended settings based on a fairly general, but equally accurate basis?

Ultimately, it's the user's responsibility to set the settings to what their hardware can support.  If their computer cannot run at the absolute maximum settings, that's their problem.  It would be nice if the game could have some kind of "high-end" settings menu, which is not recommended for use, but still available should the user know enough about their hardware to push it to the maximum.

The lighting system for the engine needs to be reworked in its entirety.

I covered a 16x16 with 1x1's with lights before.
They all lit up.

(I did this because fakekilling.)
You see the flare but they don't actually light anything up.

Oh, I see the issue now.
I just thought the OP was nuts.

You could've asked for a clearer statement. A less cluttered explanation was added to the OP. Eksi's video in his thread also shows exactly what I'm talking about.

The last four of those are editable in the options, though.

My point was that the options for those last four are too restrictive, at the very least for view distance. Even at the maximum view distance, it can still be a pain. It was originally higher, but Badspot reduced it for performance reasons. (Source)

That also plays a big role, though, how many people are still using computers that are 2005 and younger? (Im one of them lol)

Just to be clear, latency does not interfere with rendering such as that of lighting and the resultant shadows; you are completely wrong. Having an amazing broadband connection would not circumvent the problem. Many of Blockland's users are running on old and/or weak hardware.

I know that very VERY well... I know that internet isn't a key part of this. Thats why I suggested that this be a single player option.

And ya, maybe a lot of blocklanders here have old PCs, maybe the last comment I made wasn't the most intelligent one, but hay, it should be an option, thats what this topic is all about isnt it? lol.

How would making it single player only fix anything..?

You know what... Im being stupid here...

I suggest the idea... I just dont know how :P

Ignore my previouse posts :P

Why cant baddy just slap in an option that limits lights visible, but allows better lighting?

Like a server option or just an actual option for it called "Ambient Lights" or something.
