Our heavenly father has not created a literal place of eternal fire and he does not play mind games with humans. In the Bible I believe that the term "eternal fire and torture/pain for evil" is not a literal meaning. I believe that it means that the state of the wicked is compared to this. Imagine if you had a perfect knowledge that your god exists, and in the final judgment you look upon him and realize you have lived an unrighteous life? Would not your state be as an eternal fire ravaging through you of endless torture? Our purpose of life here on earth is to be tested, to progress spiritually and receive a body, which will be made perfect after the second coming. God flooded the world because of its wicked state. Only Noah and his family were righteous. Even with a perfect knowledge that god existed, people would still commit sins and their transgressions of moral laws such as Cain son of Adam. Were did all the water come from during the great flood? I'm not sure but not knowing were the water came from will not stop me from believing in a god, for one simple fact. He is God and he commands the heavens and the earth. If he were to command a mountain to move, it would. If he would command earth to become water, it would do so. We have been given free agency, so he would not "force us to believe in him" I personally believe god created the universe in the span of 7 billion years (or how ever old scientists say it is), not in 7 days as some would believe but rather 7 periods. I have now idea why or how/were you think that Pangaea is contradicted by the bible. Prophets of old wrote the Bible. Who reprinted it? More then likely catholic priests, and monks etc. Another testament of Jesus Christ
http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/10.4?lang=eng#3. God scattered the people of babylon because they worshiped false gods. It was great that they were of one people and one language, but they still worshiped false gods. I'm not sure what you want explained about multiple religions. Men believe what they want and we have the free agency to do so. Are you wondering why god has let their be so many religions and such?
@Spaceguy:
The reason why the innocent must suffer in order to punish the wicked is because of our free agency. We have been given free agency (which Satan did not want us to have, the reason for his fall) and God lets the wicked exercise their agency, even if it means others will suffer. This still does not mean that he is uncaring. He is a just God and the Wicked are punished for their injustices after life on earth. This is why the innocent must suffer, in order to punish the wicked.
I hope this helps you answer your questions.
