Anatidaephobia is the fear of ducks in general, Gary Larson only used that name in his cartoon because he had the idea planned out, then found out the scientific name for ducks was "anatidae".

This was a joke written after the Far Side cartoon.  Gary Larson has even written that he just took the scientific name for ducks and put it in front of phobia to make a duck-related fear.

Other symptoms of Anatidaephobia can include:

A Dry Mouth


Gasping or Shortness of Breath

These are impossible symptoms from a phycological fear, and are plainly a joke.

Gary also invented Luposlipaphobia, which is the fear of being chased by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly waxed floor.
