Author Topic: Considering Ubuntu, Sober me up.  (Read 836 times)

So as you may or may not be aware of I have a computer coming here in the next week or so, since I'm tight fisted I didn't really want to pay for windows 7, I managed to find a buddy who had a 3-user license that had 1 more use left, unfortunately I won't be able to get that from him until next month, so I need an OS to hold me over until then.
It occurred to me that I could use Ubuntu for free and I might like it, can anyone here recommend Ubuntu?

It's pretty good as a holdover operating system. Drivers are, however, a bitch.

It takes some getting used to too. Everything is done via a console which can be somewhat confusing if you have never done it before.

I highly recommend Ubuntu as a secondary, or first operating system.
If you screw something up in Windows, you can fix it in Ubuntu, with the help of some tutorials of course.

So I understand that if I want to run games and other software I'll have to use an emulator, how much will this rape my speed?

An emulator is an emulator. Don't expect to play anything good. Wine is the best one but it still has pretty mild compatibility. Performance really suffers.

Ubuntu is a good operating system, even if you end up having to use proprietary drivers.

I'd recommend it.

Yes, you can run most windows programs (and games) with wine, pretty sure you can't do that the otger way around.
