if we have been broadcasting radio transmissions for say, 60 years, that means we have a large bubble of radio waves about 60 lightyears in diameter. There are a couple star systems with exoplanets within this bubble, most notably Gliese 581.
Also, I don't think that part about the self involvement is entirely true. Sure, virtual reality will become real, but there is no way that everyone would be using it. There is probably a very low chance that a civilization will not make it out into the galactic scene.
