What happened to the movie rating system?

Seriously guys, I am seriously.

I never really noticed this until today but what in the hell is with movie ratings these days? I mean sometimes the people who make the movie neuter the film so that they can get the magic PG-13 rating and other times movies get a rating way higher than they should have gotten. And moreso the reasons why films get rated up are so often just plain ridiculous, this does seem to be a new development too, with recent movies getting a higher rating for "tobacco use" whereas the movie Airplane, made in 1980 has cocaine sniffing, glue sniffing, amphetamine popping, SMOKING O NOES, several puns involving child enthusiasm, several sight gags involving rooster sucking, and a scene with titties in it, Airplane is rated PG.

Tl;Dr Why are the people who rate movies pussies?

I have noticed that people will always want to watch the "Cool" Movies or the "Rated R" movies simply because it's the "In-Crowd" thing to do.
