i mean like, when i use one, i do a line, and if it isnt what i want, i undo it and do it again until it is. most of the time it ends up looking very similar to the reference, which makes me feel like i practically traced it. using references makes me feel like im just copying the reference w/o doing anything of my own, but idk how to deviate and do my own stuff w/o it not looking good/accurate to the thing that it is anymore

Please use references. The only way people get good at drawing things on their own is practicing using real life references (or you could just be insanely, naturally talented in understanding 3d space and drawing that). You have to learn those rules before breaking them. Honestly the main issue is just claiming something that is obviously a reference practice as something completely original and your own.

Don't practice using other people's styles. Use them as inspiration and influence. It really is copying if you are going to use an already drawn image as reference and use all the same details then just call it your own. Use real life, its the best teacher available.

In all Disney films, artists use actors as references. They try to copy the movement of the character, the action, and the overall form of the character. Every great artist uses a reference.

That's the problem, you're only tracing, not sketching.

I'd suggest to sketch a few circles and simple shapes and if you can do that then you can apply into drawing your characters, like I can guarantee you that 99.9% good artists (including the people here on this thread) use simple shapes right before diving into adding any detail, like so (examples below)

(^^^ This pic show how the artist does their characters step by step so you can see how they start simple before adding the details later on)

Hope this helps you out with your current issue. Also all of the artwork feature in this post belong to their respectful artists.

His is honestly not the best approach, but the proper methodology. You need to break down what you're drawing into principle shapes. There are a lot of resources online on how to start drawing live models and such. Figure drawing was a huge class for me, I was taught how to break down the human form into principle sections and shapes that you use as your foundation for detail. Don't go straight into cartoons, practice real stuff first because once you understand that, you can bend those proportions and shapes into your own style.

(Not my material but gets my point across)

Probably not? I have an account on a lot of the places they post to, but I'm too much of a shy bitch to actually post anything on any of those sites lol
