Author Topic: Format to factory settings for windows xp?  (Read 698 times)

My brother gave me his old XP computer. I mean REALLY old. It's like, 5 years old or even more. Anyways, I have it set up but I cannot connect to the internet so my brother suggests formatting to factory settings to get rid of the set up and install it again cause its not working. That and it has unneeded files. My brother gives me the disc and when I put it in it doesnt do anything. No pop ups no notifications, anything. I run it from My Computer and nothing shows up. Its as if there are no files in it. I just need to put this back to factory settings. Anyone help. Thanks in advance

If you have the disc you could just format and reinstall fresh.

 you're missing network drivers probably

Porrrosbly
I tried F8 and F12 and it doesnt give me the option

Bump.
So yeah, what button do I press at startup to get the option to reset to factory settings?

Depends on manufacturer and model but it should be visible on start up.

All I know is the manufacturer is time. I'll try and find out the model

I'd just press random buttons...... Not helpful by much.

The disc can't be loaded from in the OS properly.
Follow these steps: ==>  1. Take the disc you thought didn't work and put it in the top drive.

2. Instead of trying to use F8 or F12 and to have assumed something good happened that will make this work, try going into the CMOS by pressing either F2 or Delete. If these keys don't work use things like ESC, F9 or Ctrl+F11. When in the CMOS (it is probably a solid color in the background with lots of words and numbers) navigate using the arrow keys or any listed until you find something that says "Boot Order." Make sure booting from and CD/DVD drive is first, and that your hard drive is listed after the CD/DVD drive.

3. Now do whatever your CMOS asks to save and exit, restarting the computer. Upon restart it will say "press any key to boot from CD." (unless its forgeted brown townly with viruses) You will have five seconds to press a keyboard button to initiate the reformatting.

You, sir, are a legend. I'll try this in a sec
It didn't work. This computer is a piece of stuff

Double toast
I changed the title seeing as the disc doesn't run off the OS

Hmm... have you tried using other Function buttons (F1-F12) and Home, Delete, Insert, Etc?

Please tell me what make and model it is. It would make it easier to help.

Also, the goal here is getting your computer to boot from the cd instead of the OS. Keep an eye open for any boot menu things when it firsts starts producing images on the monitor. Don't be afraid to spam the Function keys btw.

I found the boot stuff but it won't work. I'm probably not gonna format after all if I cant figure it out

Use an old PS/2 keyboard to use the boot options, not all newer keyboards pick up in the boot sequence. I have to have an old keyboard hooked up to one of my secondary computers constantly, just in case.
