Brush Problems

I tried editing a map I previously made, but the brush won't show up when I go to edit terrain or when I try to paint textures on it.

Can you only edit terrain and texture on flatlands?

I'll put this in my FAQ 

If you are trying to change the terrain on slate or a slate edit, it will not work. Slate has no terrain.

That is not what I am trying to do.

What I meant was I edited flatlands initially, so it is still flatlands.

You probably turned off terrain repetition, making terrain editing impossible.
