I put the dollar sign before the amount, but it still seems wrong to me because people say, for example "Fifteen dollars", so you'd think the dollar sign goes AFTER the amount, but no, that's not how it works :/

Okay... I think I understand. So if I wanted to write "five-hundred and ninety-nine US dollars", I would type it as "the dollar sign 599"?

I ask you to read a sentence in which a $ goes before the amount. Because in most cases, $5 will be read as "five dollars" which makes it more natural to have the $ behind the amount. But then, grammar hates this, so they make it not happen. But then again, this might be a minor OCD for you, thats your problem. Maybe I will buy Magicka for 10$ later though.

People simply think that you read $5 like you say it (five dollars); In this way they make the mistake of writing 5$.
And it pisses me off too.

In the United States, Mexico and English-speaking Canada, the dollar or peso symbol precedes the number, unlike almost all other units. Five dollars or pesos is written and printed as $5, whereas five cents is written as 5¢
