How do I trans a png?

Well, once again. I am new to making pictures on the internet. I dont know how to trans a picture. Can anyone help me?

I got Gimp2, I trust the forums more the google. So much stuff that dosent help.

Right click your background layer in the layers windows and click (I think it's) Alpha to Selection
Just click the one that has the white and gray checkered dots. Then when you erase, it's transparent.

Or do this to any layer you want the ability to make transparent. c:
