Author Topic: Simplifying Square Root Terms  (Read 1221 times)

Algebra is a bitch.

I was away at a music lesson when my teacher taught us how to do this.
When I came back after school to get help on the homework, he wasn't there.

Basically, I just need someone to simplify the Square Root of 40, and tell me how they got that answer, in the most simple way they can.

And google didn't help.

square root of 40 is 6.324 since the calculator said so

The product of roots is equal to the root of the product.

In other words, you need to find one perfect square that divides evenly into the number you're trying to simplify. For example, if you wanted to simplify sqrt(75), you'd go sqrt(25)*sqrt(3), this would give you 5*sqrt(3).

For forty, you'd take sqrt(4)*sqrt(10). This gives you 2*sqrt(10)

Start > Programs > Accessories > Calculator

You can't get it other then using a calculator I think...

the way I usually find if it's a perfect square is by finding the prime factorization :|

Thank you, this explains it perfectly for me.

Holy stuff, I just learned this stuff in class today.

Your teacher wouldn't happen to have the last name Ralph?

Sirrus is correct. You guys are dumb, he doesn't want a simple decimal or a calculator because that's not what they're learning. Im sure he could have done it by himself had using a calculator been the way of doing it.

You realize people learn pretty much the same thing throughout the country right?

Start by braking up the 40 into smaller numbers.
               40
-------------------------
           20     2
-------------------------
         5  4

Take out the 4 since it's a perfect square.
Once take the perfect square(s) out you put the square root of it on the outside of the Square root sign or whatever.
So it should look like this now.
    ____
2/5    2

Now you just multiply the 5 and the 2.

and it should end up like this.

   ______
2/ 10

Edit: Damnit Sirrus....
