Author Topic: The Chordinator - A little music thang  (Read 2129 times)

Hey, Everyone! I love the Extended Piano Sounds pack. I also love things that make music in BL. I decided I would whip up a device that would allow basic music making AND allow you to play chords with a single click too!

So I present to you: THE CHORDINATOR!

That jumble of colors there in the middle is the device. It has two main areas: The NotePlayer and the KeySelector.
The top part is where you play the notes/chords. The slider switch controls whether it is in Chord Mode (three notes at once are played) or Note Mode (only the note you click is played). Important: The top row of notes are always in Note Mode.
The thing to know about the NotePlayer is you can only play notes in a "diatonic" scale (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). Basically, think of only being able to play the white keys on a piano if you are playing in the key of "C Major".

The bottom part is the KeySelector. As its name implies, you use this area to change what key the notes up top are in. The default key is C Major (Shown in screenshot with the upper left brick glowing as well as the one at the bottom left.) That glowing white brick in the picture actually switches the KeySelector between Major and Minor modes (Glowing is major, not glowing is minor). Minor mode basically switches some of the notes in the key for a sadder feel to the melody. The blue brick in the bottom right will remind you which button corresponds to each key.

How chords work
When the Chordinator is in Chord Mode, the note you play is the "root" of the chord and the two other notes of the chord are activated automatically. For example, if you play Do (the red notes in the picture), Mi (yellow) and Sol (cyan) will also be played. For Re (the orange notes), Fa (green) and La (aqua) will be played. It's best to just play around with it.

...And play around with it you can, because I have graciously attached the save file to the bottom of the post!

V2!

Yep, the Chordinator now has a new style, a new layout, and that chord mode switch was moved out of the way so you don't accidentally click it nearly as much. I am still keeping V1 up in case people decide they like it better.

Required Add-Ons
Extended Piano Sounds v2.0 - http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=123151.0 (Needed for the notes)
PhyDoors - http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=123017.0 (For the Slider Switch)

I THINK that is everything.

Video
I might make a video to demonstrate the device better than any amount of text could hope to do.

Updates
02/09/11 11:15PM - Updated the save file to fix a couple of missing playSound events. Don't ask how they became missing, just redownload if you downloaded the .bls before now. I added in a music brick column thing opposite the Chordinator as a "free gift" for the trouble of having to redownload.
02/24/11 11:45PM - I redesigned the layout of the device. The functionality is completely identical, but the device is now 4x6x3+1/3 instead of 4x4x2+2/3. In my opinion, the layout might be a bit less intuitive, but it is more versatile and has better "grouped chords". It also has an updated color scheme to signify that it is a product of SleTech. Save included and picture added above.

Future Plans
  • None at the moment.
  • Suggestions are welcome!

Sweet!
I played Axel-F on it :P

Also, whoever's downloading the piano sounds addon, make sure the namecheck.txt file has the same name as the folder it's in...

Bump.

Funny how well thought-out event machines are so quickly forgotten, while sloppy and uncreative 'computers' get all of the attention.

I can't remember a single one :D

Rorschach is a fan! Plus one for R0H!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm leaving for evening class shortly, but I just wanted to update that I will probably do the video either later tonight or later tomorrow, if I even feel like doing one. So if I AM going to do one, expect it to be added tonight or tomorrow. Any time after that and you know I decided not to make one, haha.

I am so glad to see that people like this thing, though. I guess I dun good.

I hate to break my rule of never double-posting unless it's necessary, but come on! Is this really only worth the fourth page?

...On second thought, maybe it is. More people obviously don't care about it enough to post their thoughts.

I can't remember a single one :D
a single what?....I Forgot..... ._.

I can't seem to switch between minor and major...

Hm... I just had an interesting idea for how to make this even more über-mega-awesome. Stay tuned while I try to figure it out.

(Hint: The current way chords are done seems rather limited, but I want to keep this simple so it is easy to play...)
