There are actually two Japanese equivalents to English's ABCs, and a logical way to order words.

The one most used today is the 五十音 (gojuuon):

あいうえおかきくけこさしすせそたちつてとなにぬねのはひふへほまみむめもやゆよらりるれろわをん
(a i u e o ka ki ku ke ko sa shi su se so ta chi tsu te to na ni nu ne no ha hi hu he ho ma mi mu me mo ya yu yo ra ri ru re ro wa wo n)

...and the outdated 伊呂波 (iroha), which is actually based off of an old poem that used each kana once.

いろはにほへほちりぬるをわかよたれそつねならむうゐのおくやまけふこえてあさきゆめみしゑひもせすん
(i ro ha ni ho he to chi ri nu ru wo wa ka yo ta re so tsu ne na ra mu u wi no o ku ya ma ke fu ko e te a sa ki yu me mi shi we hi mo se su n)
