Mozilla and Opera dropped them because there was a security hole in them that allowed you to access the memory or something like that. Google said that the other two were smoking something and that it doesn't happen in Chrome.

For Chrome, Mozilla, Safari and (hopefully) Opera. It'll still work for others, just no gradients.
Even if there's a security hole, I still think it shouldn't just get dropped like that. Me and probably lots of others are sick of this long-polling bullstuff. :/

They're not dropping it. Opera and Mozilla are working on a more secure version of the protocol. And apparently Mozilla might release it in a simple patch update at any time.
