Why blame garry's mod for your computer? Maybe you have not enough space to fit it in. It works fine for me, but it lags a lot cuz i got lots a things downloaded.

Remember that Gmod basically revolves around creating lots of objects. Ignoring the rendering and lighting, there are also physics calculations. That is why it lags. You'll want a good graphics card and a decent processor.

Lol'd it wouldn't fully download if there wasn't enough space, also hdd space being taken up makes a really insignificant difference.
Registry errors, viruses, and processor failure will slow your system along with other things not needed to list.

When I got a better computer, I was overjoyed to see that I could play Gmod with extra detail, less lag, and without crashes. :3
