Author Topic: Getting a new something for my computer but I'm an ignorant starfish!  (Read 2209 times)

I hope you've got a lot of money :/

I have that possibility, I was originally just going to build a new computer but then decided against it. Looks like it's coming back to that again, though :D

What's a good motherboard to get that has all the options I'm looking for? I just looked and it's confusing me.

I'll try and look, but I'm not 100% sure with compatibility so I'll ask one of my brainier friends. Or, Reactor Worker could just post here. Lol.

Do you really have a budget? With a bit more money you could get a better performing Intel i7 processor.
The AMD's are far far better value for money, though.

Unless you're spending ridiculous amounts of money you'd be fine with like an OC'd AMD Phenom II X6. It won't bottleneck your GPU (unless like I said you're spending ridiculous amounts of money on things like 6990s or 590s).

I probably will have a 1k or so budget.

I was looking at this bundle thingy http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.611185

It looks nice but I really have no clue at this point c:

Any thoughts?

I have this which, if it works, I think I'm going to do;

Total price - $1499.90

I might go with your build because it's 300 dollars cheaper, though.
Alot of MSI boards have been faulty lately, especially with windows 7.
That's a great CPU though. I'm looking into the new Sandy Bridge platform ones now (the one you suggested). I'll see relative performance.
Edit: The 2600K is better.
What kind of games are you playing?

If it shorts I'd be able to send it back so I'm not too worried about that.

I guess.

Have you ever built a computer before?
Also, what kind of games do you play?

Nope nope

And all kinds but mainly I want to upgrade so I can play newer games that have been coming out.
For instance I bought GTA IV with that rockstar pack and this computer barely runs it.

If you can afford the $1500, it would be a superior computer with great overclocking abilities and better performance.
I'd suggest you get a better cooler.

Also, you need to apply thermal compound between the processor and heatsink (regardless of heatsink chosen).

While you can keep the original heatsink, the upgrade would give you way better temperatures and room for upgrade (overclocking etc) in the future.

watch other videos like this on youtube, too. this ones kind of long but meh, it helps. thats a wonderful channel btw, i'd subscribe. lots of useful information. subscribe to his other channel too, linus tech tips.

I would not recommend spending that much on your first build, especially if you can't even choose a video card.

It would be pointless to even try to overclock if you have no experience what-so-ever no need for thermal compound either because just about every heatsink comes with a small tube or pre-applied patch. The V8 is a stuffty cooler too; don't even bother.

The i7 wouldn't be a good idea considering that you would get the same performance out of the i5 2400 (everyone who even ponders a 2600k deserved to be killed and raped). The MSI thing is simply not true. I'm running a sandy-bridge platform right now with and MSI branded motherboard. For $1500 you should be spending alot more on a graphics card. the 6870 is on par with the 5850 which isn't that good, especially for a $1500 budget. With a budget that high about $400 t0 $500 should be invested into graphics. Cooler-masters silent pro series is stuff too. If you are spending that much you should be aiming for a quality 800w power supply. There's also no need to have an SSD. The only increase you'll see is in loading times (1 minute for standard bootup and 30s for an SSD) which is useless and definitely not worth $200. Don't bother with two harddrives. If you have no experience that you shouldn't be spending that much on a motherboard anyways considering there is generally no difference between that and a $100 model.

That would you suggest because all of that was kind of confusing and hard to digest, but I see your point.
