Honestly, I'll have to agree with Pulcritude here. If I paid good money that could have been spent on countless other things and I bought it for myself then why should I give my delicious, earned cookie to someone just because they use a compilation of the letters p, l, e, a, and s as the first word in their sentence?

It's a fossil of natural selection that is theroot cause of all large conflicts ever since the whole pospect of ownership arose and we'll remain a flawed and disjointed race that's doomed to destroy ourselves until we doff such a mantle and become perfect altruistic eusocial communists (we never will without a horrible eugenic mess). Though mind you, society wouldn't be as it is today if we weren't all ultimately driven to compete with each other over numbers, letters and other non-tactile things.
