Author Topic: Elevators and my undying love for them.  (Read 2015 times)

The Shaft.
Was that the movie about the middle elevator?

I love elevators and escalators. Escalators are cool, but elevator are so fun and interesting, especially how they go down.

I went to moms office one day, her boss had also brought his 3 year old son.

"What happens when I press these buttons?!"

Was all he said before running his hand down all 25 floor buttons.

Stairs are fun too.

When I was in Rome a couple of weeks back with my entire year in school, the hotel my group was staying in had 2 elevators. One of them was creaky and stuff and the other one was modern and nice but stopped at every floor for some stupid reason. We also got to rode an awesome glass elevator up to the top of a pretty tall and nice building.

I avoid elevators for I am in constant fear that they'll break. Same with theme park rides.
I always avoid theme park rides of that reason

i hate glass elevators. normal ones i'm almost fine with. but i'm a control freak so i generally don't like things like that.

I remember when I was at the children's hospital that one time, and they had a glass elevator. It was fun riding up that thing, since I couldn't take the stairs or escalators. And I still remember when I was waving to my friend who was in the room next to me because he swallowed a dime.

That was before I knew of breaking elevators. And they scare me even more when I'm in one with a lot of people or a lot of luggage o-e

He swallowed a dime? painful.

My dad has an apartment on the 31st floor of his building. The elevator ride takes a long time. You jelly?

He swallowed a dime? painful.
The doctors told me the poor kid had to sleep upside down because it was lodged in his throat, and the only other way to get it out would be to cut his throat open.

And I think there's a way to hold down a series of buttons and go to the floor you want without stopping to pick people up.

Not until the cable snaps off.

My life was on escalators but that died a few years back.
Most elevators in smaller buildings are hydraulic, they sit on top of a large piston full of oil. Cable elevators are held up my multiple cables making it unlikely that all of them would break, and brakes in the pulleys can stop a slipping cable. Cable elevators are also on rails (this is why the elevator doesn't swing around when people get in) and they have a breaking system that will stop the elevator if it moves above a certain speed.

You also don't have to worry about overloaded elevators. The cables will hold way more weight then you can fit in the elevator, the weight limit is more of an issue for the motor. If it's too heavy, the motor can't turn and lift everyone. Most elevators will beep or have a light that turns on if it's overloaded, so a few people can get off and the elevator can move again.

I hate elevators, so much I've had nightmares about it. :c

I'm serious about it. Every time I get into an elevator I can't stop from shuddering and imagining what it'd be like if there was an earthquake and the elevator just dropped. Guess that's what I get for having a wild imagination, semi-phobia for heights, and riding the Tower of Terror without realizing there were handles. =/
