Anyone suggesting any mods or add-ons before the actual city building starts?

The only mods I ever liked using was the extended recreation areas, such as the woodland which changes seasons. The only "cheat" mods I like is the air cleaning park that reduces pollution... in this case I think sticking to original content is best. In the end mods are just a cheap thrill.

I kind of poked around last night since the poll was at a tie, and tried to get some of the buildings off of the official website but their registration setup is loving stupid. I then went to Simtropolis and saw this SPAM mod that replaces the Ag with much cooler Ag, but since I was tired I couldn't find the download button. :U

I voted for the Right Aqua because you still get a fair amount of land to build on, and have a lot of beaches for tourism/trade(?)

I have Sim City 4 Deluxe edition.
One of the best Christmas gifts ever.

Right Aqua wins. I'll start when I'm done downloading mods and add-ons. :o

I recommend NAM of course, and lots of medium density Wall to Wall offices (The ones by the Detriot recreation thingy), and Lexington/New York Town-Homes.

Can't wait for this to get off the ground.

So since I'm apparently dumb, the addons I thought were neat are stupid props and therefore useless. I also still can't seem to find the SPAM download.

Lordy if you can help that'd be great. I feel bad for not progressing very fast but I never even thought about mods and addons.

Also you said C$$; how can we do that so early and have it still take off?

EDIT; I got NAM installed.

Well, your uncle agreed on this parcel of land.

It's obviously a bit rougher than we anticipated, but nothing that isn't workable. First thing's first - we need some electricity! For such a small plot of land, we should be able to simply use a couple of windmills, nothing too complicated or overproductive. Next we'll need a bit of income, particularly from our friends in the industry - this is our next poll. Should we go with some dirty industry or just a bunch of agriculture? Pros and cons are pretty equal either way - ag uses less people and takes up more room, but is far healthier and more appealing to future residents, while dirty industry is more expensive, ugly and polluting. Take your pick! If we go with dirty, we can make up for some lost ground with commercial.

I'd like to add that I can't seem to loving figure out how to rotate the damn highway pieces so it might not be used much. I've also never been great at growing cities up rather than out so I'll need some help eventually. :C

Some lovey add-ons:

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/11094-new-york-homes/
(These actually appear quite early as medium density Middle Wealth houses on 1 by 2 or 1 by 1 lots.)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/18388-german-small-houses-set/
(Some nice small homes)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/16389-smalltownusa-town-hall/
(Nice looking smalltown civic buildings, they act as police stations)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/22869-bsp-hamilton-avenue-shops/
(Interesting main-streetish shops)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/21964-low-wealth-commercial-shops-volume-4/
(Low wealth shops which are more interesting than those ugly maxis ones. If you like these, there are TONS more sets.)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/21355-network-addon-mod-nam-version-29-for-pc/
(Practically the most important thing anyone would ever download. If you don't know, it adds tons of cool junk like Trams and smooth curve puzzle-pieces.)

http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/15410-js-seawalls/
(Nice attractive seawalls which come with a park. Make sure when you these down that thee coast is level in elevation.)

I don't have a link, but a sea texture which be nice; to replace the ugly Maxis water texture.

Hope these help, all of these don't have dependencies if I recall.

Edit:

Dirty Industry is best, powered by a Natural Gas Powerplant.

Also, by the way, tab rotates all puzzle pieces I think.

Thanks a lot, Lordy, I downloaded most of them.

Also I'm strongly debating simply starting out with a flat region and adding some "ocean" along one edge; it's far easier to build on and looks way better in my opinion. Would you guys get mad? :c

Also I messed with the funding a bit and realized it wouldn't be hard at all to reel in some profit and I finally got less stupid and realized how to get higher wealth housing and stuff.

And TAB doesn't work, I think. I tried it with the NAM stuff and it just switches the size of the piece, and it said Return works as well but it didn't do a damn thing. If I can't figure out a way to cope, we won't use NAM and we'll all be sad.

EDIT; This is turning into something even I'm beginning to love.

I decided to move the map to a flat region and just add a bunch of coastline; it's easier with the NAM stuff and cooler looking imo.

I went ahead with what was already turning into the more popular solution of using a Natural Gas plant and dirty industry; we'll cope until later. I also switched the land size to a medium sized portion because we can have more fun that way.

I know I'm not the greatest planner, but hell, that's what you guys are for. :D

AUGUST 2002

After recently taking a trip around your (new) land grant, you've decided it's a great location - you have plenty of white sandy coastlines that can be tourist magnets and even grab the attention of some seaport owners, in the long run, of course.

These last few years have been some quick experiments with funding, including tinkering with power supply and demand, road funding, and the local railroad funding. Your streets are now smooth and the tracks clear; funding has been perfectly tuned to bring in more money than you're spending in the first two years. You've zoned some dirty industrial around the power plant, and they seem to like the railroad idea, and it may establish some future neighbor activity between the districts of Fairview. You've given out plenty of land for residential and some locals have moved into the area growing the population to nearly 500 with plenty of work for everyone. It's looking good!

Your next decision involved which way to grow; a quick overview of your grant would help.

Go to the South and you can almost establish some healthy residential and eventually develop the area into some nice sea-town-like community. Go to the East and you can just build to your heart's desire... until you hit the need for some expensive bridges.

This part really has no formal decision; what would you like to do next?

I feel like I'm taking too much control of this project.

I started District 2, a personal neighbor. :3

Also I think Ill download SPAM.

Your idea for a healthier residential plan sounds good. If you haven't planned it out yet, leave an open space between the two housing areas. This way we can place commercial along the road connecting the districts later, maybe making that the current downtown area.

Sounds good.

Its so tempting to remove NAM because it works so undesirably for me even after tinkering with all of the pieces most of the time I've been on the computer today. They change into random roads, there's no clear rotate option, and finding the right piece is a challenge in itself. I don't know if its just me but this isn't working.

Also in some city I made this morning I got the population up to 17,000 and realized its hella hard to balance having enough dirty industry for work, little enough so you don't get pollution, and commute is even harder to manage. :(

EDIT: DECISION 3: SEPTEMBER 2003 Our city has grown to 521; we still have $480,000 to work with and a solid $150 dollars of basic income. We're starting to see medium density homes being constructed and with higher population come the eventual needs of police, hospitals, education and fire control. Your advisors are beginning to get naggy and your home surveys indicated crime is on the rise.

The most recent update yields about $200 of income now. Do you think we should be concerned with government buildings?

EDIT: *cough since no one but Lordy Lord offered input cough* The city has expanded in a southerly manner, connected by the main street.

More residential zones have been created on the other end of it which have already been constructed on. Between the two communities, you were approached by some people looking to open farms, not permanently, but temporarily - you gave them the OK and this only offers more income.

You were also approached by a man curious about looking around for a place to build a Casino - there is no build cost, he'll cover it, and if you legalize gambling, Fairview District 1 will see an additional $300 a month for placing it somewhere in the city. It will attract higher density populations, the only downside is it will look funny in your small city.

Do you want to place it?

Cough. This isn't very lively.
