Author Topic: My computer is dying - help me decide on stuff!  (Read 1218 times)

So, after nearly 6 years of quality computing, my 1st Gen. Macbook is finally failing. I've replaced the display twice, the plastic part on the top once, the battery 2 times, and switched out the ram a couple times.

I went to the Apple store today and the brown townysis is that my hard drive is within a week of failure. It's having trouble completing the tasks the computer are asking it to do, and I expect to start seeing it slow down, take longer to open applications, and whatnot.

As for my battery, it's had 457 cycles, and way over due for replacement. I was told that once a battery gets too old it will begin to expand (I'm not sure if there's truth to that) but if it's true, it will become difficult to click the mouse button because (as you may know) the battery slot is right under the trackpad.

So what do you need help with, Trifax?

Well guys, I need help deciding whether I should replace the whole laptop, or just replace the hard drive and battery.

Here's the breakdown of details on the aspect of replacing the hard drive and the battery:
  • Costs between $210 and $250, and takes time to get the part obviously.
  • I'll be on my 3rd battery. Straight up not okay.
  • Once repaired, the laptop itself probably won't last me through 6 more years.

Now here's if i get a new computer:
  • The one I would get is $879 (including educators discount from my mom), then I would subtract whatever I make from selling my current macbook, and an education di
  • That is the computer.
  • I know for a fact I can make it last through college, because that would be about 6 years and I managed to keep a crappier laptop working for that long before.

There's the details, please let me know what I should do. I'm not getting a PC, deal with it. Whichever decision I make, it needs to be quick (read the beginning, fool). [/list]

Stick it in her pooper.

lol is that what those maccigarette genius bar guys told you?
that is the most unprofessional thing an "IT" person could tell you about your hardware lol.
you cant predict stuff like that, and you shouldn't be telling people that.

it sounds more like they knew you are computer stupid (because you use a mac? lol) and you would fall for that garbage and buy a new one.

I summarize what he said. I don't remember what the error list was, but I remember looking at the diagnostic window and seeing 1 unrepairable error, and dozens of other errors that basically said the hard drive was struggling with completing things the computer was asking it to do.

It wasn't a prediction at all, the diagnostic said in red letters "Hard drive failing" or something.

No, the ridiculous part is the price of the battery. The harddrive is 110-150 bucks, understandable, but the battery is 130 ordinarily, 99 bucks is what the guy offered me.

Do not ever take a laptop to a store to get it checked out. Do not even enter an apple store, that's even worse. Apple products are just plain awful and are hella expensive. I've never opened my PC once in the coming on eight years I've owned it, and it's still running just fine despite a few red lines appearing on the LCD and a solitary broken pixel.

Don't get a Mac, basically put.

Unless you want low-end technology that you're paying a lot more for, of course.

you could run diagnostic tools on a brand new computer and get errors lol. its not even an indication of real problems.
im sure my comp right now has 100 "issues"
if thats how mac IT people work, by just running the app as some end all decision; then i wouldnt go to them for help.
geek squad would help you more.

Considering it's 6 years old I would get a new computer

Are you that loving stupid? That's why the stores are there.

It's actually pointless arguing with you because you're a close-minded douche bag. If you haven't opened your computer in 8 years I'm guessing it's severely out of date, so I'm actually surprised it still runs with decent speed and performance, if any.

I've had awful experiences with Geek Squad on multiple occasions. I won't be talking to them any time soon. I know it's not a bunch of bullstuff, because the reason I took it in in the first place was because my harddrive was clicking and everything was getting errors when I tried to open applications. I took it in, assuming the worst, and wanting to be better safe than sorry.

My prebuilt PC I got in 2003 still functions as fast as the day I got it

If you have money for a alienware lappy, go for the MX11.

You can customize it  to the specs of a mx17 for a lot less money I think.
