it wouldn't be acceptable to mispronounce a Japanese name just because we don't feel like pronouncing their vowels the same way.
The difference being that the roman alphabet is extremely flexible and can represent nearly every sound human beings use in speech.
Japanese glyphs however, cannot. Besides the sounds for
TH and
L being completely unrepresented in their writing, there are many other issues with consonants as well. The English language has substantially more sounds that rely on consonants, whereas words in Japanese always end on either a vowel or on a nasal assonant.

The name doesn't change, but the pronunciation changes drastically to accommodate the fact the Japanese can't pronounce most of the syllables that can't be represented by kana. For example the name "Leonard" would be read as "
Reh-oh-nah-do" by a Japanese person because pronouncing English consonants is about as difficult as it is for Americans to trill their
Rs when they speak spanish.
