Why the hell does it do this? Makes a new window every time I double click a directory in the current window, and I'd like to keep it all in one window.

And the option clearly says not to open it in a new window:

I'm just confused right now, and really annoyed. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Well, did it do it when you changed those specific settings?

I changed nothing on the tab that the screenshot of the settings was taken, but I changed some options in the last tab to show extensions on known filetypes, and to show hidden folders, and it didn't start doing this until a month later after I did this.

Do a scan for viruses just in case.

Is Windows Security Essentials good enough for a scan?

Download avast and ad-aware then scan with both but I don't think it's a virus or malware issue. Just do it to be safe I guess.

Just curious: have you tried restarting by any chance?
Just asking because a lot of people don't even think about restarting for problems like this.

It started yesterday, and I shut it down before today, does that count as restarting?

It does.
Also, I don't really know how to fix this, but I can tell you a few things to try:

In Folder Options, try hitting "Restore Defaults" in General. (might be different in 7, but it's at the bottom of the window in Vista).

Try selecting "Open each folder in it's own window", hit apply, then select "Open each folder in the same window" and hit apply.

I'll see if anybody else on the Internet's had this issue, and see if I can find some solutions.
