I've finally developed a taste in music broad enough to warrant me getting an mp3 player, but I'm apparently a grandpa who knows nothing about them except that kids like them. If I got an iPod or something, would I be able to just put songs on it from a computer (legally) or would I have to go through something like iTunes to get songs?

But, I think there's software that you can get that bypasses iTunes

You can put songs from your computer and iTunes unto an iPod.

You have to use iTunes, but you can put any music you have on it by just putting it in your library and dragging it onto your iPod.

So does iTunes cost money, or does it just cost money to buy songs. And if it does cost money to buy songs, does it have some way of telling whether music was obtained legally or something?

iTunes free, only music and video costs money.

iTunes is free. You can add mp3 files to iTunes, or buy songs directly from it.

itunes is like amazon.com. the website itself is free, the merchandise on the site costs money. that's basically itunes.

I'd assume from all the "OST"'s ripped from games I am sure it is legal.

Also, prepare to stab iTunes in the eyes.
