Author Topic: Rant about my parents and me using their computer - Wall of text?  (Read 5657 times)

I'd just like to emphasize this part of my post:

Quote
You need to explain to them EVERY time you use the computer, exactly what you're going to do. Parents will always assume the worst, so when you say "didn't want to bother her" she sees it as you taking an opportunity to sneak on.

Let's say you want to use the computer to check your email and update a game. Tell them: "Hey mom, since neither you or dad are using the computer right now, I'm just checking with you to make sure it's alright if I check my email and update a game on steam. I'll be off in 20 minutes, and you can watch me do this if you really don't trust me like you said."

I guarantee this will work, and if it doesn't, you'll just have to deal with the fact that your parents are the best parents. Sorry.

With him, he has 1-3 torrents downloading at a time. That slows the wireless and even the main computer that which the router is based from greatly. My downloads are from 5mb to 1gb, and that's maybe once every week or so. Only about 2 out of 5 of my downloads are torrents, but I don't download torrents very much.
This is piracy, I thought?

You're 11?

I said that exact same thing.

Dude, you have to be the most mature 11 year old I've never met. Not to mention on these forums alone, you Annoying Orange even some older members your understanding of the situation and your ability to express it through text.

If you're truly as skilled in conversing as this post has shown me, then may I suggest (if it hasn't already been done so) that you simply sit your parents down and try to persuade them to allow you internet access on your own computer. Do so maturely and thoughtfully, applying any and all advise previously given by members here (sans the handicapped posts) and I think you might be able to pull something off.

I think what Trifax said will work.

I said that exact same thing.

I agree.

Even though my opinion may not matter much anyway, seeing as I'm about the same age.

how about taking the computer out of your room?
why have it there if you dont have internet anyways???

I swear, if this was directed to me, I'd have a huge smile on my face.
But I'm 12.

"I don't have internet.

MY COMPUTER IS USELESS."

This is piracy, I thought?
No. Not necessarily. If you look at it that way downloading anything could be piracy. It could be, depending on what you are downloading. aaaaarrrrttttttiiiiiiccccccclllllllleeeee.

Well, maybe try telling them you are not a dog, and maybe you could simply ask for permission before downloading stuff. Sounds like they are paranoid of viruses, are they very smart tech-wise? I am glad my mom only browses the web and uses the old Dell in my bro's studio, and my dad is rarely on the computer. Really, I have my own user with a password no one else knows, and my mom simply asked how to get too her user.

Buy ethernet cord
Plug one end of ethernet cord into your PC
Plug other end into router
Make sure cable is out of view
Close out of internet when parents walk by
DONE, BRO

OR

Buy USB wireless internet connecting device
Plug into back of your PC
Connect to internet
DOUBLE DONE, BRO

Now, if you don't want to go the "sneaky-little-douchebag" route, you could always spend a few days thinking up a good valid argument to make to your parents about having internet on your compooter.

I got both my computer and internet when I was 10. Just thought youd like to know that.

As for your sticky predicament, I have a couple suggestions for you:
1. wait till your 13. Sometimes parents can wait until your a teenager before giving you interwebs.
2. Ill say this again, go to your mom and simply and NICELY ask why she doesnt trust you. If that doesnt work then NICLEY ask when you could get the internet. And if she says "When your older", ask her approxamately what age. You have to be somewhat aggressive, but dont go to far, I.E. getting rude and plainly disrespectful.

I hope this informative post has/will help you in any way.
Good luck.

I have the same problem. I have what,21 files,18 in use,and my dad says im download to much stuff? bullstuff.
