If you're not too advanced, use windows movie maker. If advanced, move on to Sony Vegas 10 (10 is the best) and then move on to After Effects (what the pros use and I use (sometimes), i think after effects was used to make the movie Avatar).

If on Mac:
Start with iMovie
Move on to final cut pro
Then after effects for mac.
