Now and Then, Here and There is one of the few animes that avoids being an anime and actually has a well written story and character cast.

go watch nichijou and everything you need will be answered. sengoku basara's also a good thing to reccomend, especially with "the last party" (best movie title) coming out soon.

All the late 80's and 90's gundam series are pretty good, I'd avoid SEED and WING though...

As for manga, I really like GANTZ and Hellsing. But I don't know if you'd like them, since they have rather mature themes like gore and nudity.

Ao no Exorcist, Xam'd: Lost Memories and Tenjou Tenge are pretty good anime I'm watching right now.
