It's because there's no official port of Steam to Linux, therefore you have to run it through WINE, and since it's not a 100% Windows "emulator", Steam has a difficult time running since it has to use WINE resources instead of native Windows resources.

Last time I checked (a few years back), Steam didn't even work with WINE.

I like how you talk about Linux being the best and all yet you still use Windows.

Yeah, sadly I'm pretty much forced onto Windows because of Steam. If I didn't have so many Windows-only games that required Steam, I'd probably make the switch to full-time Linux already. But alas...
