Author Topic: Is the ATI 5770 a big leap over the 9800GT? (Read 411 times)

I saw an ATI 5770 over craigslist for 75 bucks (yes, craigslist.) and I want to know how much better it is than my current 9800GT.

Does it make enough of a difference to be worth it? That would be all my money I am saving up for a new motherboard to get a new processor, and I'm quite indecisive.

Buy a new motherboard. You'll need it. I had a 9800, but it burned out after my motherboard's PSI express slot began to wear out. My motherboard ruined not only my 9800 but also an 8800 after the first one burned out. Now I have a new computer, which was 900 bucks, and my graphics card sucks. :)
Getting a new motherboard will be more worth your while. The 9800 is good.

Yeah I plan on upgrading to an AM3 motherboard, to get an AMD phenom quad core.

Right now I have a pentium. But motherboards and processors are so damn expensive D:

I did some research and found mixed "reviews" comparing the two. Some say it's at least 2x faster, some say not that big of a difference. Majority of the reviews say it is noticeably better than the 9800GT. It's worth the $75 as well. I have one and can run many games I have on maxed out settings (Rift, Fallout NV, ARMA2, Portal 2), there hasn't been a game yet that I haven't been able to run maxed out. I have an ATI Radeon HD 1G.

It's also difficult to compare. Some games are built for Nvidia cards such as Crysis, making a benchmark test sometimes give varying results depending on the game.

What processor do you have? I have an Intel i7 860.

Intel Pentium Dual core ~3.6 GHz

If anything, you could probably resell it and get a profit.
Depending on the condition, that is.
