If you're on a tight budget an AMD processor isn't a terrible compromise. Just be sure to check out the reviews/benchmarks of the various models and don't be fooled into thinking a 6-core processor is going to grant you any performance advantages in games.

That's what I'm doing. It's a quad-core. 6-core is way to underpowered, unless the loving thing had like 1-2GHz cores.

Are they worth it? I'm getting a AMD Phenom II x4 @3.40 GHz on my new build later this year. I want to go with an AMD CPU this time.

If you're wanting an AMD build next, wait for the new bulldozer structure coming out sometime hopefully this month, if they don't delay it.
Apparently it'll be a bit better than Intel's i7's, that's until Intel releases their new structure (early next year?).
